How are the LA animal shelters keeping the animals cool in the heatwave?

I'm really worried about the animals in shelters with this heatwave. I know they have mist, but a lot of the shelters don't have enough shade etc. I wish I could take in more, but I already volunteer at a local rescue, pulling animals off death row and fostering.

I used to worry about the heat in city shelters, especially after a summer a few years back when one of them lost power for a day. I learned from a friend who works at a shelter that they've upgraded to industrial fans and big evaporative coolers, which help keep the kennels cool. The concrete floors also help, and they freeze water bottles to lay out for the dogs to rest against. However, the outdoor runs and play yards are still a concern due to limited shade, especially in older facilities that weren't designed for sustained heatwaves.

I used to work at a shelter on the east coast when I was in college. The area was rural and prone to power outages, so we had a backup generator. The cat side was fully enclosed and air-conditioned, but the dog side was in a large warehouse-like structure with a concrete floor. The air conditioning worked less effectively there, but we still managed to keep the animals cool.

Shelters often use swamp coolers and fans to keep animals cool. Donations of these types of equipment are always welcome.

My rescue's shelter has industrial-sized swamp coolers that they use to cool the animals. They hook up a water hose to make it work.

Historically, the heat can cause more stress in households, leading to an increase in animal surrenders during the summer months.

You're suggesting that more pets are surrendered to shelters during the summer and late summer than at any other time of the year. Can you provide more information about this?
