Navigating NYC with a stroller, any tips?

Navigating NYC with a stroller, any tips?

I've recently purchased a Bugaboo Fox 5 Renew for my baby, but I'm concerned about using it on buses and subways in the city. I've done my research, but I'd love to hear from others who use large strollers in NYC on a daily basis. I'm looking for practical advice on how to navigate the city with a big stroller.

You'll get a lot of warnings telling you not to get on the bus or subway with a large stroller, but in reality, people don't care about anyone's mode of transportation in this city. If you're set on using a big stroller, the Fox 5 is smaller than the Vista, which is very popular, and people use it on buses and subways all the time.

To be honest, buses and the subway aren't really a part of our daily routine with a baby and a stroller. We usually just walk around our neighborhood, and strollers are required to be folded up on buses - good luck folding one while holding a newborn or toddler! The subway is a pain too, but there are a few stations with elevators, and if you've got a buddy with you, it's doable. If you need to go somewhere not in walking distance, you'll probably just take a cab.

Most buses now don't require folding up the stroller - they'll have a little stroller icon by the door, and there's usually a designated stroller area by the rear door.

I'm glad to hear that bus drivers have started accommodating strollers - I used to melt down trying to figure it out!

Strollers are not required to be folded up on buses, and many now have designated stroller areas with seats that fold up near the rear doors, making it easier for parents to transport their children.

Getting onto the subway platform with a big stroller can be a bit of a challenge, but I usually just wear my baby when I'm going on the subway and switch to a lightweight travel stroller once my kid gets too big. I use my big stroller around the neighborhood, and it's great for walking on sidewalks and navigating through local parks.

Use the wheelchair filter on Google Maps to find subway stations with elevators - it's a lifesaver. Most don't smell like pee, and if they do, it's only for 60 seconds. Lots of people will also help you walk your stroller up the steps.

We ended up with three strollers - a Bugaboo, an Uppababy Gluxe, and a Maclaren umbrella. We probably used the umbrella the most because the Bugaboo was a pain on buses, trains, and other public transportation.
