Cancún Warns of Dangers in Public Water Fountains
Hey there, expats and digital nomads in Cancún! If you're like me, you might enjoy a quick dip in some of the city's public water fountains. But recent warnings from local health officials have me thinking twice about that.

Héctor González Rodríguez, the director of Benito Juárez Health, issued a cautionary note about the potential risks of using fountains and other public water sources for recreation. This warning came after a case of Naegleria fowleri, also known as the 'brain-eating ameba,' was reported in Yucatán.
- Public water fountains in Cancún are not designed for swimming, so avoid letting children play in them.
- Be extra careful during the hot season, when more people use these water features for relief.
- Don't swim in water sources whose cleanliness you're unsure about.
This is particularly important for children under six, adults over 60, and people with health conditions. I've noticed that even on quiet streets, kids sometimes splash in these fountains, so it's a good reminder for all of us.
