I've recently come into some free time, and I'm curious what people are doing to build community in Austin. I've always found niche hobbies to be a great way to meet like-minded people.

Last year, I discovered the thrill of competitive jigsaw puzzling. It's a surprisingly intense activity that requires focus and strategy. I've found a small group that meets monthly at a library in the northern part of the city, where we challenge each other to solve speed puzzles while enjoying synthwave music.

My partner and I started bird watching this year and it's more fun than it may sound. We've attended several events hosted by the Travis Audubon Society, which has been a great way to meet like-minded people. In fact, we've spotted over 20 different species at one of their events.

The Austin Carving Club meets on the first Thursday of every month at Hancock Recreation Center at 6:30 pm. Members gather to practice whittling and block carving, and I'd be happy to add anyone interested to the email list.

Film photography is my niche hobby. I often visit the closing of old Austin businesses to capture their unique atmosphere on film. After developing and scanning the photos, I donate the negatives to the Austin Historical Society, which has even featured one of my projects in a magazine.
