Tulum Sees Wedding Boom, But Not Everyone is Happy
One wedding can leave 65,000 dollars in Tulum, and the local government is trying to attract more of them. The latest move? A destination wedding showcase held on October 2, featuring over 100 professionals from the sector.

The average wedding in Quintana Roo costs 205,000 pesos, with between 10,000 and 65,000 dollars left over. This spending spread across 400 suppliers, including hotels, restaurants, florists, and taxi drivers, is a major boon for the local economy during the low season. A wedding in Tulum can bring in up to 65,000 dollars, and the town is trying to attract more of them by hosting a destination wedding showcase on October 2, featuring over 100 professionals from the sector.
However, not everyone is thrilled. The number of weddings in Tulum is not publicly available, but Chetumal and Bacalar celebrated over 1,500 weddings in 2025 with a target of 2,000 this year. Sargassum has even canceled about 10,000 weddings for 2026 in the Mexican Caribbean. The competition from other areas and the canceled bookings highlight the challenges Tulum faces in attracting more weddings.
For expats and digital nomads, this means more competition for local businesses, but also a chance to benefit from the influx of tourists. Keep an eye on the market and be prepared to adapt your business to cater to the needs of wedding parties. The ayuntamiento's efforts could mean more opportunities, but also more pressure on local resources.
