What can I do about a mouse infestation in my Toronto apartment?

I've been dealing with a recurring mouse infestation in my Toronto apartment for over 10 years, despite my landlord's attempts to fix the issue. I've complained to him about the problem for a year and asked for pest control for a month, but he's been negligent and dismissive. I'm considering moving out due to the stress and health concerns caused by the infestation.

I've had success with eliminating mice from my apartment by thoroughly cleaning up food sources and waste. I cleaned all poop away, packed up every bit of food in the house that isn't in a can in strong plastic containers, including pet food, and did dishes relentlessly, cleaning any crumbs, taking the garbage and compost out nightly. This approach led to a significant reduction in mouse droppings in my apartment within a short period. To catch any remaining stragglers, I set up humane traps, specifically plastic see-through traps called Zack traps, and caught two mice over the next week. While this method may not work for everyone, it's definitely worth trying.

We decided to adopt a cat and use a combination of live and glue traps. Fortunately, I haven't seen any mouse droppings in a few months now. I believe the cat was the key factor in eliminating the problem.

A few years ago, I had a rat problem, but I found that Tomcat snap traps were effective in eliminating them. I'm sure similar traps are available for mice. While using snap traps can be messy at first, you'll eventually get used to it and become motivated to catch more mice. However, I'm not sure if snap traps are the best option for everyone.

To prevent mice from entering your apartment, seal all cracks and holes with steel wool or, if budget permits, copper mesh. Additionally, setting out traps can help deter mice from getting inside.

I had a mouse infestation in an apartment, and I suspect they were also in the vents. It was a disgusting situation, with one mouse even appearing on my couch. After adopting two cats, the mice disappeared, and I never saw them again. I believe the cats' scent kept the mice away.

Even the presence of a cat can be an effective deterrent against mice. The scent of owning a cat may be enough to keep mice at bay.
