I play tennis quite often in Toronto. Sometimes a ball from the neighbouring court rolls onto mine, and I'll go a little out of my way to pick it up and return it to the other players.

Responding with a smile and nod when someone says thank you is completely acceptable. Those who get worked up over not hearing 'you're welcome' are being overly sensitive.

Saying 'you're welcome' or 'no worries' in return is generally considered polite, but it's also rude for others to correct you when you've already shown appreciation.

In most cases, people who respond with 'you're welcome' are trying to acknowledge gratitude, often because they perceive the initial response as ungrateful or lacking in appreciation.

It seems like a generation gap issue, particularly with older generations, who often expect a verbal acknowledgement like 'you're welcome' when responding to 'thank you.' My parents, for instance, get annoyed when I say 'no problem' because they want a more explicit response.

When interacting with people in LA, I found that responding with a simple 'thank you' was often met with a curt 'uh huh,' which I initially thought was impolite, but I chose not to correct them, as that would have been even ruder.
