Toronto Poet Anne Carson Wins Nobel Prize in Literature
A Toronto-born poet, essayist, translator, and professor, Anne Carson has just won the prestigious 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature. The 76-year-old has been awarded the prize for her bold and inventive oeuvre that, in playful dialogue with the classical tradition, has created new forms for contemporary literature.

Carson's accolades include Guggenheim and MacArthur Fellowships, a Lannan Literary Award, a pair of Griffin Poetry Prizes, the T. S. Eliot Prize, the Princess of Asturias Award, the Governor General’s Award for English-language poetry, the PEN/Nabokov Award, and was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada in 2005. She will receive a prize of 12 million Swedish kronor, which translates to approximately CAD $1.71 million.
The University of Toronto, her alma mater, is celebrating this incredible achievement, with President Melanie Wood expressing delight and praising Carson as a proud moment for the global alumni community and for the entire university.
This is a major recognition for the literary world and a significant milestone in Carson's career.
