Sharks in Calgary: More Fearsome Fiction than Fact
Sharks might be the stuff of nightmares for beachgoers, but for expats and digital nomads in Calgary, the likelihood of encountering one is pretty slim. As a physiotherapist working with newcomers in Calgary for two years, I often field questions about safety, and sharks are a common topic of concern. Here’s what you need to know.

While Canada isn’t exactly shark territory, incidents like the ones reported in Quebec and Nova Scotia do raise an eyebrow. The Canadian Shark Attack Registry reports 31 cases over 330 years, with only one fatal incident. This means the odds of a shark attack in Canadian waters, including Calgary, are extraordinarily low.
For those who have a keen eye and spot a fin in the water, here’s a quick guide: sharks have vertical, side-to-side tail fins, while dolphins have horizontal, up-and-down fins. If you ever find yourself in a shark sighting scenario, it's best to err on the side of caution and head back to shore.
But don’t let the fear of the unknown keep you from enjoying the great outdoors. Whether you’re exploring the lakes or rivers, or just taking a leisurely stroll along the riverbank, the chances of running into a shark are virtually non-existent. So, relax and enjoy the beauty of nature, knowing that the odds are in your favor.
