The sun was just starting to set on October 21, casting a warm glow over the newly opened Avenida México by Parque Hidalgo. Mayor Luis Ernesto Munguía González presided over the ribbon-cutting ceremony, marking the end of a year-long renovation.

The stretch, between Argentina and 31 de Octubre streets, has been transformed to blend with the Malecón, using the same materials and patterns. The surface was raised, and new storm drains were installed to better handle the summer downpours. As I walked along the revitalized street, the smell of fresh paint and the sound of distant children playing in the park filled the air.

But the big question is: can you drive on it? For now, yes, but the city has a two-month pilot plan allowing vehicles in, while prioritizing pedestrians and cyclists. Some local business owners would prefer the street to remain pedestrian-only, while many drivers want it back in the downtown road network. The mayor hinted at a possible alternating use schedule, but no details have been announced yet. The city has also set aside a space for taxis, ensuring the flow of visitors continues.
