Building Trust in Nosara: A Deep Dive into Costa Rican Business Culture
Living in Nosara for three years now, I’ve seen firsthand how the business culture here revolves around trust. It’s a bit different from what you might be used to back in San Diego. Here, relationships are everything. If you want to do business in Nosara, you need to understand the local way of doing things.
Why Trust Matters
Costa Rica, and Nosara specifically, is all about building strong, personal connections. In my surf school, I often see new students struggle when they first arrive. They come with expectations from their previous experiences, but the local way of doing business is more about trust and relationships than contracts and paperwork.
How It Works
When you meet someone, you start building a relationship. It’s not just about the business transaction; it’s about who you are as a person. Once you’ve established trust, deals are made over a cup of coffee, not in a boardroom. The formalities come later, if at all.
For instance, when I first started teaching, I had to prove myself to the locals. I had to show that I knew what I was talking about, that I was a reliable teacher, and that I was genuinely interested in the community. Once I did that, the doors opened, and I’ve been teaching ever since.
Left a desk job in San Diego for Nosara's surf three years back. Now teaches beginners how to read the break at Playa Guiones.
