NJ Transit Cuts Service for Five Weeks as Portal Bridge Cutover Nears Completion
Starting this weekend, NJ Transit will cut service for five weeks as the final phase of the Portal Bridge cutover project begins. This disruption, which will last from October 11 to November 14, will impact Midtown Direct service, diverting trains to Hoboken on weekdays. While this is the last major service disruption due to the project, it's crucial for expats and digital nomads living in or visiting New York to plan accordingly.

For those who can work from home, this is the perfect opportunity to avoid the hassle. For those who need to travel, it's advised to do so outside peak hours, before 7 a.m. or after 9 a.m. in the morning, and before 4 p.m. or after 7 p.m. in the evening. Expect limited capacity and crowding on trains during peak hours, so be sure to allow extra travel time.
During this period, NJ Transit will cross-honor PATH, bus, and ferry service and provide enhanced morning and evening ferry service. However, this means you might need to plan alternative routes or use shuttles, as you did during the last service disruption in February and March this year.
After the work is completed, the old bridge will be decommissioned and demolished early next year, ensuring safer and faster rail operations across the new Portal North Bridge. This disruption, while inconvenient, is necessary for the long-term benefits of the Gateway Project, which aims to modernize and improve rail travel across the Hudson River.
