With the soterramiento eléctrico (underground electrical infrastructure) project well underway, Isla Mujeres is set to see a significant transformation. Ángel Hernández Azueta, the coordinator general of Public Works, announced that the new subterranean electrical network is already operational, enabling the removal of at least 20 old and outdated power poles along Avenida Juárez. This change, while it may cause temporary traffic disruptions, will undoubtedly enhance the island’s aesthetic appeal and streamline its urban image.

Modernizing Isla Mujeres: The End of Power Poles and Improved Aesthetics

According to the municipal government, the removal of the power poles is part of a broader modernization effort. The Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE) has been working to dismantle the necessary components, ensuring that the transition to the new system will not affect electricity supply to residents and businesses. Although there will be temporary road closures, the city encourages patience and cooperation from the community.

This development is particularly meaningful for expats and digital nomads like myself, Amelie Renaud, who moved to Isla Mujeres with two kids in 2022. The removal of power poles not only improves the visual landscape but also reduces potential hazards for visitors and residents. As a parent, I appreciate the cleaner, safer environment this change brings to the island.
