El Zonte Gets a Boost: 5-Year Tax Exemption for Local Artists and Creative Businesses
El Salvador’s Legislative Assembly has just passed a groundbreaking measure that will give local artists and creative businesses in El Zonte a much-needed financial break. The five-year income tax exemption for individuals earning up to $15,000 annually and for businesses earning up to $25,000 will take effect soon. This means that artists in El Zonte can focus more on their craft and less on the financial struggles of the tax system.

“Art is work, artists are professionals, and they are also part of El Salvador’s Gross Domestic Product,” noted Suecy Callejas, a lawmaker who championed the bill. This new legislation acknowledges the vital role that the creative sector plays in driving tourism and community development across the country. In El Zonte, where the beachside community is home to many artists and creative entrepreneurs, this tax relief will be a significant boost.
While El Zonte has long been known for its laid-back beach vibe and artistic community, this new tax exemption will help artists retain a larger share of their earnings. This, in turn, will allow them to reinvest in their professional growth and creative projects. As a fellow expat in El Zonte, I am excited to see how this new policy will impact the local art scene and the broader community.
Arrived in El Zonte in 2024 from Brazil. Still figuring things out, writing it down as it happens.
