Do people in Dallas get annoyed if you ask to pet their dog on a walk?

Every day, I walk 15 minutes to reach my bus stop in Dallas. Most days, I cross paths with people walking their dogs. Some people try to tug on their leash, maybe out of consideration so the dog doesn't jump on me. Other times, a dog would be curious enough and want to sniff me. I really want to let the dog come close to me and pet the dog but I hesitate because I don't want to bother people. The older men are generally sweeter because they always pass a smile and so I feel comfortable enough to compliment their dogs. Haven't petted one yet. Would that bother you or am I overthinking? I think most people where I live seem to want to not be bothered. Or is it me?

As long as you ask first, it's all good. Just don't be weird about it.

It's great that you're considerate of others' feelings. I usually ask before petting, but I've noticed that sometimes you can tell when a dog is eager to interact. This often depends on the owner's intentions, who may be training their dog to remain calm or to let loose when receiving attention.

As a dog owner, I appreciate it when people ask for permission to pet my dog. It's a sign of respect and courtesy, especially when we're out on a walk. I believe that if you want to pet someone's leashed dog, you should ask the handler for permission first. For instance, I've found that dogs on leashes tend to get anxious if they're not allowed to sniff and explore their surroundings.
