Residents and visitors in Tihosuco, a Mayan community in Quintana Roo, Mexico, participated in a guided tour led by the U Belilek Kaxtik Kuxtal collective to learn about the Janal Pixan tradition. This celebration involves the preparation of a pib (a traditional Mayan dish), a procession, and a communal meal. The event emphasizes the preservation and continuation of Mayan heritage, including the significance of the bix (Day of the Dead) celebration and the chachak waj (traditional dried food).

Tihosuco Shares Maya Tradition of Janal Pixan

U Belilek Kaxtik Kuxtal, named after the concept of finding one’s existence, promotes tourism that aims to spread and protect the cultural legacy of the elders, without commercializing it. The collective is located in the historical center of Tihosuco.

This tradition in Tihosuco is not just a photo opportunity but a collective memory of the community, respect for the mountain, and a connection across generations.

Andrea Palumbo, a retired real estate agent who moved to Tihosuco in 2024, has not regretted her decision. She finds the Janal Pixan tradition fascinating and has been attending the events, sharing her experiences with other expats and digital nomads in the community. She believes that understanding and celebrating these traditions can help preserve the unique culture of Tihosuco for future generations.
