The heart of Cancún’s hotel zone, Boulevard Kukulcán, has long been a high-risk area for pedestrians, especially tourists. With an increase in pedestrian accidents, the Cancun, Puerto Morelos, and Isla Mujeres Hotel Association, in coordination with state and municipal authorities, is taking decisive action. A comprehensive road safety and education plan is being rolled out to ensure the safety of millions of walking tourists and local hospitality employees.
Trading Traffic Lights for Speed Bumps
The most notable change is the installation of heavy speed bumps, or *topes*, replacing traditional stoplights. These speed bumps are designed to force vehicles to come to a near-complete stop, significantly reducing the risk of high-speed collisions. While some locals initially feared gridlock, early data suggests that these barriers are actually improving traffic flow and respecting pedestrian rights-of-way.
The Road Safety Education Campaign
Education is a crucial component of this initiative. The Hotel Association is launching a comprehensive media campaign to educate incoming tourists about the realities of driving in Quintana Roo. This campaign aims to bridge the gap between tourist expectations and the local driving culture, ensuring safer streets for all.
