Cancun's Hidden Fee: An Increase That Affects Every Visitor

Living in Cancun for nearly a decade, I’ve seen the city evolve, but rarely have I encountered a change as significant as the proposed 35% increase in the Derecho de No Residente (DNR) fee. This fee, which is baked into the cost of your flight, could drastically alter the budget of any traveler, especially families.

The DNR is a federal tax that every international tourist pays upon arrival. Currently set at 983 pesos, the proposed increase to 1,334.80 pesos would mean an extra $66 per person. While this might seem like a small amount, it adds up quickly, particularly for families visiting the Riviera Maya. This fee is hidden, quietly embedded in your ticket price, making it a hidden cost that many travelers are only now realizing.

The debate over this fee is heating up. The Mexican Caribbean Hotel Council, representing hotels and timeshare associations, is actively opposing the increase. They argue that the funds should be used for local tourism improvements, rather than being redirected to federal infrastructure projects. The Mayan Train, a significant federal project, is a prime example of where these funds could be better spent, benefiting the local economy directly.
