Cancún’s Grocery Guzzler: We’re Losing More Food Than You Think
Mike D, a Canadian retiree in the Hotel Zone since 2021, has been fishing and enjoying the beach life here. But a recent study has shown that Cancún’s residents are throwing away a staggering 260 grams of food per day. That’s a lot of wasted food, folks!

What’s the Deal?
According to a study by Cáritas Banco de Alimentos, Cancún is the second worst city in Mexico for food waste. Only Guadalajara beats us. The study, which took place over two weeks, involved experts from the University of the Caribbean, the University of Quintana Roo, and the Polytechnic University, along with support from INEGI. The results are quite eye-opening: each resident of Cancún tosses about 95 kilograms of food per year. That’s a whopping amount of unnecessary waste!
Why Does This Matter?
Wasting food means wasting resources. We’re talking about water, energy, and even money. Not to mention, this is a significant issue in a country where food insecurity is a real problem. It’s time for us to take a closer look at our own habits and see where we can make improvements.
So, next time you’re about to throw out that slightly overripe fruit or the last few bites of your meal, think twice. Every little bit counts, and together, we can make a difference. Let’s pledge to be more mindful about our food and help reduce waste in our beloved Cancún.
