Drone Deliveries Boost Health Access in Boquete’s Neighbors
Imagine needing a vital medication and having to wait hours, even days, for it to arrive. In the Ngöbe Buglé region, a challenging indigenous area in Panama, this is now a thing of the past. Thanks to a groundbreaking pilot project by the UN Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and the Barça Foundation, drones are delivering essential medicines and supplies in just 30 to 40 minutes, revolutionizing health access in this remote region.

The Ngöbe Buglé area, home to over 6,000 people in 37 communities, faces extreme poverty and poor infrastructure. The drones are now bringing crucial health services, including treatments for chronic illnesses like diabetes, hypertension, and HIV, as well as emergency medications and diagnostic kits. This project, the first in Latin America to use drones for health, is set to expand, potentially reaching other hard-to-reach areas like the Darién jungle.
For expats and digital nomads based in Boquete, this means a smaller world of health resources. While the drone program may not directly affect your daily life, it highlights the potential of modern technology in addressing health disparities. If you have connections in the Ngöbe Buglé region or know someone who does, consider how these advancements might impact their well-being.
Stay tuned for updates on how this initiative evolves and consider supporting similar projects that enhance access to healthcare in remote areas.
