Tulum's Clear Blue Waters Greet New Season: A Refreshing Welcome for Families
After months of battling the pesky sargassum, Tulum's beaches are finally looking their best. As clear water and clean sand return, the town is gearing up for its winter season, welcoming travelers from around the world. As a fellow expat who moved to Tulum with two kids in 2017, I can attest to the joy this brings to our community, especially to those of us with children who relish the chance to play in the pristine waters.

According to the Secretaría de Marina, 123,000 tons of sargassum have been collected across Quintana Roo in 2026, a stark reminder of the challenges faced by this beautiful coastal town. The state's sargassum program, which opened on April 1 and is set to close on October 31, has played a crucial role in keeping the beaches navigable and attractive. While the cleanup efforts were grueling, they have paid off in the clarity of the water now.
As the winter season approaches, Tulum is preparing to open 10 free public beach access points, a move that aligns with the federal government's efforts to promote inclusive tourism. These access points, especially the four beaches within Jaguar Park (Playa Santa Fe, Pescadores, Maya, and Mangle), offer a perfect spot for families to enjoy the clear waters and stunning views. The archaeological zone, perched above, is also set to receive a new lighting, enhancing the evening experience for visitors.
