Transporting Cremated Remains as Carry-on at Pearson Airport?
Transport 3 answers • FlorenciaFlorencia
My husband and I are planning to travel to visit our family in Toronto soon, and we're worried about transporting our mother's cremated remains as carry-on. We had everything sorted out last year, but now CATSA is referencing a 350ml limit, and we're not sure if that applies to cremated remains. We've been told by Air Canada that they're fine with full remains as long as it's packaged properly and is accompanied by the right paperwork, but we're still unsure. Has anyone travelled with cremated remains in the last couple months who can let us know what security said?

Last year, I tried to bring cremated remains on a flight but was unsuccessful due to security concerns. It's a security decision, not an airline policy. You can find more information on the CATSA website.

I had a similar situation, and I was denied clearance through security. Fortunately, I had arrived at the airport two hours early, which gave me enough time to resolve the issue and make my flight. The documentation provided by the funeral home is not relevant when it comes to security screening.

I flew with cremated remains on two separate occasions in 2019 and 2022 without any issues. Security used a special tray to scan the urns separately from other belongings, and I wasn't asked for any paperwork.
