As a parent of two and a resident of Calgary for nine years, I can attest to the noticeable rise in menu prices at local eateries. According to the latest data, 80% of Canadian restaurants have increased their prices in the past year, a trend that's impacting dining experiences across the city.

Calgary Restaurants Feeling the Pressure: Price Increases and Labor Costs

The report, 'The inaugural Hospitality Operator Report' from EconoLease, surveyed 250 Canadian foodservice and hospitality operators. It highlights that the rising costs of goods are the main driver, with 64% of respondents citing food and beverage costs as the largest increase. This is followed by a 55% rise in labor and wages, and a 32% increase in rent and occupancy.

Local Calgary restaurants are not immune to these changes. The report shows that 80% of Calgary-based restaurants have already increased their menu prices, and 49% plan to do so again in the next 12 months. This trend is expected to continue, affecting everyone from casual diners to families looking for a night out.

While some restaurant owners are seeing slight improvements in their profit margins, the overall impact on consumers is significant. It's a reminder for us all to budget accordingly and perhaps explore some local favorites that may offer more value for money.
