I've noticed that long-term residents have stopped noticing the importance of recycling, and I'm curious to know if any politicians in Santurce are actively promoting it.

Ada Álvarez is promoting recycling, at least from what I've seen.

Caguas had a decent recycling program, but after the storm in 2017, I don't think they've made any effort to revive it. The city's recycling facilities were severely damaged.

Saying recycling in Puerto Rico is like a necessity due to high waste production; we're one of the jurisdictions that produces the most waste, so recycling is almost mandatory. We also have the situation with landfills that are ordered to close, so waste can't be stored anymore. It's not just about recycling, we need to reduce waste production.

Recycling involves people being willing to learn and the local government contributing to establish the necessary infrastructure. The local government's lack of support for recycling initiatives is a major obstacle.

The only active recycling policy in PR is from their parties and politicians; in environmental terms, they care little since it ends up in the landfill. Before the Trump administration, we negotiated scrap metal and textiles with China, but that's no longer the case. Any business that starts up quickly gets hit with costs, making it expensive to operate a recycling industry in PR, not to mention the electricity and water costs for this industry.
