Agüimes Revives a Historical Village Uprising with 'The Camel Herd Reunion'

In a significant event for Agüimes, the town has revived its first-ever communal uprising, known historically as the 'Camel Herd Reunion', through a dramatic adaptation staged by local residents. The production, directed by Nacho Cabrera and featuring an extensive cast of amateur actors from the community, is a theatrical adaptation of a historical book by Faneque Hernández that recounts the events that took place in the village in 1708.

The historical rebellion, led by the populace against the bishop and lord of Agüimes, Juan Ruiz Simón, who sought to seize the stored grain in the communal granary for his own profit, is being commemorated through this poignant performance. This act of resistance, marked by the villagers' staunch refusal, has deepened the town's collective memory and identity.

Recently, the mayor, the culture edil, and the author of the play joined the cast of the performance, marking a moment of communal pride and historical significance. The revival of this event is not just a celebration of the past but also a call to remember and honor the resilience and unity of the Agüimes community.
