Puerto Morelos Steps Up to Fight the Fire in Benito Juarez

It was a crisp morning in Puerto Morelos when the news hit-smoke from a raging fire in Benito Juarez was making its way over, casting a visible gray haze across the sky. The town, which has been relatively untouched by such events, now finds itself stepping up to contribute to the fight against the blaze.

Earlier this month, on August 23rd, local authorities received a wave of concerned citizens expressing worry about the increasing presence of the smoke. This prompted a swift response from the municipality, which decided to send in reinforcements to assist in the firefighting efforts. Now, on September 7th, around 100 personnel, including members of the Cancún and Puerto Morelos fire departments, along with SEDENA and state-level emergency services, are en route to the affected area. They will be equipped with water tankers, tools, and a mobile command post to coordinate their efforts.

The incendiary situation in Benito Juarez, located south of the Chiapaneca neighborhood, has grown to cover approximately 80 square kilometers, with authorities reporting a containment rate of 55%. As the smoke continues to spread, Puerto Morelos is determined to lend a helping hand, ensuring that the fire is brought under control and the safety of its residents is maintained.
