Adjusting to Panama’s Heat: A Guide for Fitness Enthusiasts
Living in Panama City has its unique challenges, especially when it comes to staying fit in the heat. As an Argentine retiree with four years under my belt, I’ve learned firsthand how the climate can impact your workout routine. Here’s a practical guide to help you navigate the heat and find the right balance for your fitness goals.

The Humidity Factor
One of the biggest hurdles in Panama is the high humidity, which makes sweat less effective at cooling your body. This is why acclimatization is key. Give yourself two to three weeks of shorter, easier sessions in the heat to adapt, or else you might find yourself sitting on a bench during the third class. If a gym can’t explain its cooling and ventilation, it’s worth paying extra for better air flow.
The Timing Trap
Timing is everything when it comes to group fitness classes in Panama. Early mornings (5:30 to 7:30) offer the coolest air and emptiest studios, perfect for high-intensity classes like spin or boot camp. Mid-mornings (8 to 10) are ideal for strength and sculpt formats. Avoid high-intensity workouts during midday to late afternoon, unless the room is air conditioned. Evening classes (after 6:30) can be workable but expect slower warm-ups and more breaks due to the accumulated heat of the day.
Building a Weekly Routine
Organize your week into tiers based on heat intensity. Tier one, low heat, includes yoga, mat Pilates, and gentle stretching formats. These are flexible fillers that work well at any hour, including during the midday stretch. Tier two, moderate heat, includes body sculpt, total toning, and barre style sessions. These are ideal for mid-morning or a cool evening, as you can still hold a conversation between sets. Tier three, high heat, comprises spin, HIIT, kickboxing, and boot camp classes. These belong in the early mornings or evenings when the air is cooler.
By understanding the impact of Panama’s climate on your workouts and adjusting accordingly, you can maintain a consistent and enjoyable fitness routine, even in the heat. Whether you’re a seasoned expat or a digital nomad, these tips will help you stay on track and make the most of your fitness classes.
