New York City is on the verge of a green revolution, aiming to create more than 40 miles of new greenways in the outer boroughs. As an expat veterinarian here for two years, I’ve seen firsthand how vital these green spaces are for both locals and visitors. This initiative is not just about improving infrastructure; it’s about enhancing the quality of life for all New Yorkers.

The Department of Transportation (DOT) Commissioner Mike Flynn has announced that community workshops will begin this fall to gather input on four greenway projects in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Staten Island, and southern Queens. The first workshop, focusing on the Bronx greenway, is scheduled for November 4. Residents can attend in person at the BankNote Building in Hunts Point or virtually on December 3. These greenways will offer safe paths for walking, running, and cycling, connecting residents to jobs, parks, and other neighborhood destinations.

The Bronx greenway proposal includes a 15-mile route running east from Randall’s Island to SUNY Maritime, aiming to improve commutes to industrial job centers like Hunts Point. In Brooklyn, a 12-mile gap in the existing greenway network will be filled, connecting Coney Island to Highland Park and Broadway Junction. Southern Queens will benefit from a 7-mile greenway that improves cycling access to John F. Kennedy International Airport, while Staten Island’s 10-mile greenway will create an east-west route across the North Shore.

These greenways will not only enhance the physical environment but also boost local economies by attracting more people to the area. As someone who works with newcomers, I know how important it is to have good, green spaces that make New York feel like a home. By participating in these workshops, you can help shape the future of your neighborhood and make it even better for everyone.
