It’s not time to hit the panic button yet, but if you have a trip booked to Los Cabos this week, you need to keep your eyes firmly on the weather forecast. Meteorologists and civil protection officials along Mexico’s western coast are closely monitoring a rapidly developing tropical disturbance officially designated as Invest 99E. The system is gathering strength over warm waters in the Eastern Pacific and is highly expected to become the region’s next named tropical storm within the next 48 hours.

Los Cabos Brace for Potential Storm Impact: What You Need to Know

Rapid Formation Expected In The Next 48 Hours

According to the latest outlook from the National Hurricane Center, Invest 99E has an exceptionally high 90 percent chance of tropical cyclone formation over the next 48 hours. Environmental conditions across the southwestern coast of Mexico are ideal for rapid development. Exceptionally warm ocean surface temperatures and favorable upper-level winds are providing the exact fuel a storm needs to quickly organize. Forecasters expect the system to form a well-defined center and officially become a tropical depression or tropical storm by Monday or Tuesday.

Why Cabo Cares (Even If It Doesn’t Take A Direct Hit)

Many vacationers make the mistake of thinking a storm only matters if the center of the hurricane makes a direct landfall. In Los Cabos, that is absolutely not the case. The geography of Land’s End means Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo are uniquely vulnerable to ocean swells and moisture bands pushing up from the south, even when a storm remains hundreds of kilometers away. You do not need a direct hit to experience widespread vacation disruptions.

What Travelers Should Do This Week

If you are currently relaxing at a resort in Los Cabos or packing your bags to fly in this week, there is no reason to cancel your entire vacation right now. However, you do need to stay proactive.

  • Monitor Daily Port and Beach Flags: Never ignore warning flags on the beach. If you see red or black flags posted along Medano Beach or the Tourist Corridor, stay out of the water completely.
  • Keep In Touch With Tour Operators: Stay in touch with your tour operators and listen to their guidance. They are the best source of information for local conditions and any changes to your planned activities.
