How did tree trimmers get my phone number?

How did tree trimmers get my phone number?
Dienste 7 answers • giuliagiulia
I'm an Italian retiree living in Dallas for four years. I've noticed that my phone number keeps getting shared with random companies, including tree trimmers and roofers. I recently received a text message from a tree trimmer who mentioned an overgrown bush on my property, which I had not mentioned to anyone. I'm concerned about how they got my number and the invasive nature of their solicitation. I'd like to know if anyone else has experienced this and how they've dealt with it.

I used to work at a large media agency, where we handled campaigns for numerous clients. One client, a doctor's office, implemented a campaign that used Bluetooth technology to identify patients with specific medical conditions who walked by their office. They would then send targeted text messages inviting these patients to receive treatment. This practice is no longer allowed, but it highlights the level of data and capabilities some companies possess. Additionally, grocery stores often track customer behavior, including which aisles they visit and whether they make purchases in those areas.

As a precaution, I turn off my Bluetooth and Wi-Fi before entering stores to avoid being tracked. It's ridiculous that this is necessary in today's digital age.

I recently visited Target on an aisle where I was looking at a protein powder. Although I didn't take out my phone, I had it in my pocket, and a few hours later, I received an ad for the same brand in my social media feed. It's clear that my online activity was being tracked even when I wasn't actively using my phone.

I'm fed up with receiving spam calls and messages. Given that my personal information has been compromised multiple times, it's likely that spammers are purchasing leads from these breaches. I've made it clear that I won't engage in business with companies that engage in this practice, and I hope others will follow suit to deter these spammers.

There are numerous businesses willing to trade personal information for financial gain. Even publicly available records, such as those found on the county appraisal site, can be used to cause harm. With the ease of access provided by Google, it's concerning to think about the potential consequences.

I frequently receive unwanted calls, often related to my in-laws' property or my own home's maintenance needs. It's clear that our contact information has been mismanaged somewhere along the line, leading to these annoying calls.

We need to establish a process to identify the businesses behind these text messages and hold them accountable for violating consumer protection laws. With the DNC registry and other regulations in place, there's no excuse for companies to claim ignorance about their lead generation practices.
