Navigating the Hidden Costs of All-Inclusive Vacations in Cancún

Living in Cancún, I often see first-time visitors to the area taken aback by unexpected charges at all-inclusive resorts. The promise of an all-inclusive vacation can be a false one, with hidden fees that can add a bit of stress to the beginning of a much-anticipated trip. Understanding these charges before you arrive can help you avoid any surprises.

Navigating the Hidden Costs of All-Inclusive Vacations in Cancún

The most common hidden cost is the municipal Environmental Sanitation Tax, known as the Derecho de Saneamiento Ambiental. This tax, ranging from 70 to 85 Mexican Pesos per room per night, is collected by local municipalities to fund beach conservation and infrastructure. While it may not seem like much, it must be paid directly at the front desk, sometimes causing frustration for those who assumed their all-inclusive package covered everything.

Another significant hidden cost is the Incidental Security Hold. High-end all-inclusive resorts often require a credit card to place a temporary deposit of $200 to $500, or even up to $1,000 for luxury properties. This hold can be a challenge for those using debit cards, as the funds are immediately frozen and can take up to ten business days to be released, potentially leaving you short on cash during your trip.

For early arrivals, some resorts also charge Wristband Fees, which can be a surprise for those who arrive early in the morning. These fees, while not as common, can still add to the initial costs of your trip.
