My child turned three and he can read simple sentences, write short words and do rudimentary math. I'm worried about putting him into school early as he's small for his age already and a pretty sensitive kid.

As someone who started school early, I can attest that being the youngest in the class can be challenging. I struggled in junior high and high school, but my experience changed when I entered college. I was not adequately prepared for the academic rigor, and it took time to adjust. To minimize potential difficulties, consider enrolling your child in a class with peers closer to their age.

I was one of the youngest in my class and found it challenging to connect with my peers in elementary school. However, when I entered middle school and was placed in classes with peers closer to my age, I began to form meaningful relationships. I eventually had to repeat a grade to stay with my friends, which taught me the importance of being with peers who share similar experiences. My preschool experience was enjoyable, but I was too young for kindergarten at the time, and my mother thought I was ready due to my advanced skills.

Unless your child is extremely bored with school, I don't think it's a good idea to send them early. This is because starting school too early can lead to social and emotional challenges that may affect their academic performance and overall well-being.

It's vital to provide your child with substantial, structured group experience before they start school. While extracurricular programs can supplement their academic development, they shouldn't replace social learning. Given your child's sensitivity, you may want to explore programs that cater to their needs. Have you noticed any sensory sensitivities in addition to their emotional sensitivity?

At three years old, children are still learning to navigate the world around them. It's essential to allow them to enjoy their childhood and not rush them into academic or social expectations. Children learn valuable social skills by interacting with their peers, and this is an essential part of their development. By giving them time to play and explore, you're setting them up for a well-rounded childhood.

My child has a strong affinity for letters and numbers, and it's challenging to get them to engage in other activities. I've tried taking them to playgrounds and watching Disney shows, but they prefer educational content. As a result, I often have to coax them into participating in activities that are typically enjoyed by their peers.
