I've noticed that many Thai people don't wear sunglasses, even though Bangkok has a very high UV rate. I've seen this in other South East Asian countries as well. In the West, it's common to wear sunglasses, even when the UV isn't as high. I'm curious why this is.

Thai people don't seem to be too concerned about wearing sunglasses. In fact, people who wear them casually might be perceived as suspicious or trying to hide something.

It's interesting to see people riding their bikes with one hand and covering their eyes with the other. Perhaps they'd feel more comfortable if they wore sunglasses while riding. On the other hand, it might be more convenient to ride one-handed and avoid the hassle of wearing sunglasses.

Bangkok's proximity to the equator means that the sun rises and sets quickly, spending very little time in the direct path of the sun. This is especially noticeable when driving, as the sun is often high in the sky.

In Japan, people rarely wear sunglasses, possibly because hiding one's eyes can be seen as hiding something or blocking nonverbal cues. Additionally, umbrellas are a common sight, providing protection from the sun without obstructing one's face.

It's amusing to note that while people in Japan and Thailand (who started wearing masks in 2020) often wear masks, which can be seen as blocking communication, they don't seem to associate sunglasses with the same issues. Different cultures, different norms.
