Flight cancellations caused by the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau have left many expats and digital nomads in Bali facing tough choices. Good news: Indonesia’s immigration authorities are offering emergency stay permits and waiving overstay fees for those affected.

The policy, announced on Monday, September 7, by Immigration Director General Hendarsam Marantoko, aims to provide legal certainty for foreign nationals stuck in the chaos. With 520 flights cancelled between September 5 and 7, affecting over 86,760 passengers, this move is a timely relief.

Apply for an Emergency Stay Permit (ITKT) at any immigration office. Valid for up to 30 days, it’s free of charge and can be extended if airspace restrictions persist. Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Tangerang has two dedicated counters for such applications, with 26 processed as of Monday.
