CFE's Persistent Problem of Rotting Utility Covers in Playa del Carmen
600+ Unresolved Requests for Fixing Rotting Utility Covers - As a fellow expat living in Playa del Carmen, I can't help but notice the ongoing issue with rotting utility covers in the city. The latest news from local politics reveals that the Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE) has over 600 unresolved requests from the Playa del Carmen municipal government to repair or replace broken covers. This problem isn't new; regidor Juan Novelo Zapata has been voicing concerns for two years now, but the situation remains unchanged.

The broken covers pose a real risk to pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers. Not only do they create hazards, but they also damage the city's image. The CFE has promised to purchase new covers but has yet to follow through, despite repeated requests. Their response to recent power outages, where they sent temporary crews but left without completing the work, hasn't been deemed sufficient by Novelo Zapata.
The regidor has suggested that the city should allocate funds to address the broken covers, but the question remains: how will this be resolved? Until then, residents and visitors alike should be aware of the potential dangers while navigating the streets.
Arrived in Cancún in 2024 from Germany. Still figuring things out, writing it down as it happens.
