Cancún Celebrates Maize Culture with Festival del Maíz
The Festival del Maíz, a celebration of Mayan culture and maize, took place in Felipe Carrillo Puerto from September 29 to October 1. The event, organized by students from the Benito Juárez García (UBBJ) Tihosuco Campus, aimed to highlight maize's importance in traditional Mexican cuisine and identity.

During the festival, students from the UBBJ Tihosuco campus performed a traditional Mayan ceremony, and showcased different types of maize. Attendees had the opportunity to taste traditional dishes and drinks made from maize. The festival aimed to remind people of the significance of maize in their daily lives and cultural heritage.
Adriana Poot Pat, a student from the UBBJ Tihosuco campus, explained that the activity seeks to remember the role of maize in their lives.

Before the exhibition began, a traditional Mayan ceremony was held. Aj K'iin, a Maya priest named Aniceto Velázquez Chi, led the offering and gratitude.
The ceremony requested a good development of the festival activities and hoped for the fruits of the work.
During the exhibition, students from the UBBJ Tihosuco campus presented various types of maize and explained the foods that can be prepared with this grain. Attendees had the opportunity to taste traditional dishes and drinks made from maize.
Five years ago, I drove my entire life from Mexico City to Cancun in a packed Nissan. The plan was to stay six months. The Caribbean had other plans. Now I run an e-commerce business from a hammock (sometimes literally) and spend too much time arguing about which taqueria is the best.
