Calgary’s Sports Fields: A Tale of Two Sports
Calgary's latest Parks and Open Spaces Community Level Amenity Analysis reveals an interesting contrast: while soccer fields are underused, cricket pitches are almost at capacity. As an accountant in Calgary for the past decade, working with many newcomers, this report stands out to me as a reflection of the diverse interests within our community.

The analysis shows that soccer fields are used only 15% of the booked time, while ball diamonds see 40% usage. Conversely, cricket pitches are utilized 93% of the time. This discrepancy might be due to the quality of the outdoor pitch, which, according to the Calgary Minor Soccer Association, can deter players from using the fields for organized sports. Additionally, the report highlights that 83 Calgary communities lack any sports court, suggesting a need for the city to establish a minimum service level based on local needs.
It’s worth noting that many parks also lack benches, with 155 shade structures scattered across the city, and some areas, like Ward 10 and 11, have just two each. This underscores the ongoing challenges in providing adequate amenities for residents.
The report also points out that developers often front-end the recreational amenities and transfer maintenance costs to the city, leading to a growing renewal funding gap. This means that when assets reach the end of their useful life, the city must find the funds to renew them, which can be a significant challenge.
For expats and digital nomads considering Calgary, this report might influence your decision. If you’re into cricket, you’ll find plenty of opportunities, but if you’re a soccer player, you might need to look elsewhere for well-utilized fields. The city is certainly aware of these issues and is working on improving the efficiency and utilization of existing facilities before considering new developments.
