I'm planning to buy a brand-new Honda motorcycle from Mityon in Thailand. The dealer says the official white license plate will take around 2 months and assures me I can legally ride with a temporary red plate during that time. However, I've read that red plates may not be legally valid for motorcycles and that using one for more than 30 days could result in a fine.

If you buy a new bike in Bangkok, you'll have PRB insurance, but you won't have paid road tax yet because you don't have a number plate. This means you're technically breaking the law, as riding without a number plate is also against the rules. Nevertheless, it's a common practice for new bike owners, and the police often turn a blind eye because they know it takes a couple of months for the plate to arrive.

During the day, you shouldn't encounter any issues as long as you have all your necessary documents in order. However, nighttime can be a bit more complicated, especially with the presence of checkpoints.

In Bangkok, new bike owners don't receive a red plate immediately. I personally went two months without a plate and didn't experience any problems.

As a local, I've ridden my NMAX without a plate for two months. To avoid any issues, I just make sure to have a copy of the buying receipt or the waiting for a plate paper with me, especially when traveling to places like Pattaya or Rayong.

I've had zero issues riding my Zontes around Pattaya and Bangkok, even after five months, and I've also traveled to places like Koh Chang and Khao Yai without any problems. My bike has a red plate, but I've never been stopped or asked for my documents.
