I'm in the market for a used car and want to know when to pay for a pre-purchase inspection to ensure I'm getting a good deal.

It's more efficient to inspect just one car at a time. By the time you've taken it for a test drive and checked its history, you should have a good idea which one you want. You can arrange for a mechanic to inspect the vehicle on your behalf, simply inform the dealer that you'd like to have a pre-purchase inspection and they'll usually agree. If they refuse, that's a major warning sign and you should walk away.

There's a risk that someone else might buy the car before you've had a chance to inspect it thoroughly. Dealerships have already inspected the vehicles and have access to their Carfax histories. When choosing a used car, consider one with low mileage and a single owner.
