Tourism's Shadow Casts Doubt on Archaeological Integrity in Tulum
It’s no secret that Tulum and its surrounding archaeological sites are beloved by millions each year, but as a yoga teacher based here, I’ve noticed that the balance between tourism and preservation might be tilting the wrong way. An INAH archaeologist, Jaime Garduño Argueta, has accused the institute of prioritizing tourist convenience over scientific integrity, citing several controversial changes.

The Services Area at Tulum
At the Tulum archaeological zone, a new services area has been constructed adjacent to the ancient perimeter wall. This structure reportedly obstructs the view from the main entrance and changes the historical setting. While INAH hasn’t responded to specific details about the services area, Garduño argues that it compromises the authenticity of the site.
The Wooden Staircase at Nohoch Mul, Cobá
The most visible change, a wooden staircase on Nohoch Mul, has been a source of controversy. The staircase, built to replace the original steps closed due to heavy wear, has been hailed by INAH as a protective measure. However, Garduño sees it as an intrusion that contradicts conservation practices established since 1975. The authenticity of the site is the crux of the debate.
Forty-Seven Monuments Relocated to Chetumal Park
The most serious accusation involves the relocation of 47 monuments to a new park in Chetumal. Garduño claims these structures were moved from areas not directly affected by the Tren Maya, and their relocation was unnecessary. The federal prosecutors are now involved, and the case is being closely watched.
These changes not only impact the integrity of the archaeological sites but also affect the daily experience of visitors and locals. As someone who works and lives in Tulum, I urge everyone to stay informed and perhaps voice their concerns if they feel passionately about the preservation of these sacred spaces.
