Is the tip screen at the counter really for everyone?

At a small place in Kensington Market I ordered at the counter, and the card machine turned toward me with tip buttons before I had any food. Nobody was going to bring it to my table. I pressed the lowest button and felt rude. Do people here tip at counter service, and what do you do when the screen turns to face you?
