Toronto’s Hospital to Expand Permanent Housing Program, Bringing Hope and Cost Savings
Just a few months ago, I was working with a patient at the University Health Network (UHN) who had been coming to the emergency room almost daily. After moving into the Dunn House, a unique permanent housing program, his life began to turn around. This program, which has seen great success in reducing hospital visits and saving costs, is set to expand significantly in Toronto.

Starting in 2024, Dunn House in Toronto's west end opened its doors to 51 residents. Now, the plan is to build three more similar buildings, targeting a total of 300 people in need. The first of these, Spring House, is already in the works, set to provide 54 units for seniors who are homeless. The federal and provincial governments, along with the city and the hospital, are partnering to fund these projects, with the federal government investing over $25 million and the City of Toronto contributing $19 million.
This expansion is not just about providing homes; it's about improving health outcomes and reducing the burden on the hospital. Preliminary data from Dunn House shows a 52% decrease in emergency room visits and a 79% reduction in hospital stay lengths. These numbers translate to significant cost savings for the hospital $1.66 million saved in the first year alone. The residents of Dunn House have also seen positive changes, with many turning their lives around, finding jobs, and even returning to school.
For expats and digital nomads living in Toronto, this news is particularly relevant. Not only does it offer hope for those in need, but it also means better resources and a more stable community. As a veterinarian working with newcomers, I see firsthand the importance of stable housing and healthcare. This initiative is a step in the right direction, and it's great to see the city and hospital working together to address this issue.
