Northern Lights: A Spectacular Show Coming to Toronto Tonight!

It’s a thrilling night for all the astronomy enthusiasts out there, as a geomagnetic storm could bring the northern lights to Toronto and southern Ontario for the first time in a while. According to The Weather Network, the display could start around 11 p.m. tonight, intensifying to G2 (moderate) levels around 5 a.m. on Friday. So, if you’ve been planning to catch a glimpse of these stunning lights, now is the perfect opportunity.

For the best viewing experience, head to a safe spot away from city lights, preferably with an unobstructed view of the northern horizon. Toronto’s skies are expected to clear overnight, and with the new moon approaching, there should be minimal moonlight to interfere with the potential aurora sightings. Follow NOAA’s updated aurora forecast for the latest updates.

Even if the northern lights don’t appear tonight, there’s another treat for skywatchers: Muskoka is hosting a series of guided stargazing experiences over the next few weeks, offering a chance to explore some of Ontario’s darkest skies. So, grab your binoculars, and let’s make the most of this rare celestial event!
