Siem Reap’s New Cultural Pop-Ups to Enliven Tourist Experience
After eleven years as a licensed Angkor guide, I’ve seen the crowds at Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom come and go. But this new initiative from the Cambodia Tourism Board (CTB) is something different. Starting on September 18, Kun Bokator, Cambodia’s ancient martial art, will be performed at the Terrace of the Elephants in Angkor Thom, alongside the traditional Lkhon Khol shadow theatre. The shows, which will run every Friday and Saturday, are designed to bring a new level of energy to the visitor experience, adding moments of surprise and creativity to the tour.
The Terrace of the Elephants, a majestic part of the walled city of Angkor Thom, will host the Kun Bokator performances, while the Lkhon Khol schedule and location will be announced through CTB’s social media channels. These pop-up shows are not just for tourists; they offer a unique opportunity for locals to engage with their living heritage in a new and exciting way.
The performances are free to attend, with each show lasting 30 to 40 minutes. Local communities and international visitors alike can now look forward to these unexpected cultural surprises as they explore Siem Reap. With support from the APSARA National Authority and the Siem Reap Provincial Administration, these events promise to elevate Siem Reap’s reputation as a dynamic cultural destination.
So, whether you’re a seasoned traveller or a local, mark your calendars for the first performance on September 18. Let’s discover, experience, and celebrate the energy of Siem Reap together.
