Cambodia Launches SME Coordination Unit to Streamline Business Processes and Boost Local Economy
The Cambodian government is taking a significant step to support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) by establishing a new Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) Coordination Unit. This one-stop service aims to simplify business registration, license renewals, and permit processes, and it will also monitor the implementation of incentives for SMEs.

According to Prime Minister Hun Manet, the SME Coordination Unit will act as a facilitator, coordinating with relevant ministries and institutions. The move comes in the wake of a national campaign to boycott Thai goods, which has boosted domestic production. The government aims to ease business registration, remove barriers to local production, and reduce reliance on imports.
For expats and digital nomads living in Siem Reap, this new initiative is particularly relevant. The unit will cut down on the time and cost associated with registering and managing businesses, making it easier to start or expand operations in Cambodia. Existing or new SMEs will benefit from improved access to technical support, capacity building, and other services.
While the unit will streamline processes, it's important to note that access to capital remains a challenge. The Federation of Associations for Small and Medium Enterprises of Cambodia (FASMEC) is working on a memorandum of understanding with the Agricultural and Rural Development Bank to provide loans to SMEs. However, careful consideration should be given to borrowing to ensure that loans are used for intended purposes.
