Health Professionals Urge Protection of Water Sources in Santurce
Living in Santurce, I've noticed how much the community relies on clean, accessible water. That's why I was particularly struck by the recent letter from health professionals urging the government to protect water sources from development projects and proposed legislation. As someone who owns a bike rental business here, I've seen firsthand how changes in the environment can impact our daily lives.

The letter, signed by a coalition of health professionals, highlights the critical importance of safe, sufficient, and reliable water supplies for public health. They specifically point to House Bill 1079 and a Senate substitute measure as potential threats to Puerto Rico's karst region and specially protected lands, respectively. These proposals, if enacted, could significantly affect water quality and availability, which are already under stress due to drought and aging infrastructure.
The signatories argue that government policies on water management should be guided by scientific evidence, equity, and public accountability. They recommend developing planning and preparedness measures to prioritize access to drinking water for vulnerable populations during droughts. This is a timely reminder for all of us to be vigilant about the measures the government takes to safeguard our water resources.
