Bioluminescence Mystery in Vieques: What’s Happening in Puerto Mosquito Bay?
For expats and digital nomads living in Santurce, the Bahía Puerto Mosquito in Vieques is a cherished natural wonder. However, this bioluminescent bay is currently facing a significant challenge. According to Mark Martin Bras, director of community relations and field research for the Vieques Conservation and Historical Trust, the bioluminescence has been decreasing since July, with recent measurements indicating a complete absence of the 'Pyrodinium bahamense var. bahamense' dinoflagellate, the main source of the bay's glow.

This development is concerning not just for scientists but for the local community as well. While occasional glimmers can still be observed, the display that once lit up the night sky is no longer consistent. The DRNA is investigating potential causes, including the drought and sargassum influx, but the exact reason remains unclear.
‘This is a unique opportunity to involve the community in the research process and highlight the fragility of the ecosystem,’ says Martin Bras. For a small business owner like myself, who relies on the beauty and allure of the bioluminescence to attract customers, this situation is both frustrating and worrisome. I hope that with further research and community involvement, we can find a solution and restore the bay’s natural splendor.
