Bias in School Bus Bidding Process Could Disrupt Services in Santurce
As a lifelong resident of Santurce, I’m always on the lookout for news that could impact the daily lives of my neighbors and visitors. The recent allegations of bias in the school bus bidding process are certainly worth a closer look.

The organization representing Puerto Rico’s school transportation providers has raised serious concerns about the bidding process overseen by the General Services Administration (ASG). José “Pepe” Rosado, president of the Puerto Rico Federation of School Transportation Providers, claims that 81 transportation companies were excluded and another 18 were only partially awarded routes. This could leave over 18,000 students, including many with special needs, without guaranteed transportation services when classes resume in January.
The bid process began in March, with proposals submitted in April and contracts awarded on September 11. Despite filing a request for reconsideration on September 19, the Review Board dismissed over 80 reconsideration petitions, raising questions about the fairness of the process.
This situation is particularly concerning for expats and digital nomads who rely on the school transportation system for their children. It’s important to stay informed about the potential disruptions and to be prepared for any changes in service. If you have children in the local school system, it might be wise to reach out to the ASG or the transportation providers directly to inquire about the status of your child’s route.
