Tenerife Tests ES-Alert System: What You Need to Know
On October 22, Tenerife will conduct a test of the ES-Alert emergency alert system as part of the VOLCANEX Tenerife 2026 drill. This test, organized by the Cabildo of Tenerife, aims to familiarize residents with the alert system without triggering unnecessary panic.

The Emergency Coordination Centre (CECOES) 112 will send out three messages between 9:00 and 14:00. The first alert will indicate a yellow volcanic alert, the second will simulate an evacuation in Guía de Isora, and the third will announce the end of the exercise. Residents can receive these alerts even if their phones are off or in airplane mode, but they should pull over safely to read them. The alerts can also be received in English if your phone is set to a non-Spanish language.
Compatible smartphones will receive these civil protection alerts if the feature is activated. Most modern Android and iPhone devices have this setting enabled by default, but users with older versions can find instructions on the 112 Canarias website. These tests are a reminder that staying informed about the alert system is important, even if the Canary Islands haven't experienced a volcanic eruption in years.
