Festival de Papalotes Brings Ocean Conservation to Puerto Morelos
As I sip my coffee on the beach in Puerto Morelos, I can’t help but think about the upcoming Festival de Papalotes. This event, scheduled for August 22, is more than just a fun day out; it’s a call to action for our younger generations to understand the importance of preserving our marine ecosystems.

The festival will take place from 9:00 to 16:00 at Playa Sol in Puerto Morelos. It’s a perfect opportunity for families to gather, unleash their creativity, and learn about the rich marine life of the Caribbean Sea. There are two categories: Categoría A for children aged 8 to 12, and Categoría B for teens and young adults between 13 and 17. Participants can draw inspiration from marine creatures like octopuses, fish, and shells. The event’s theme, 'cuidar el mar es cuidar la vida' (taking care of the sea is taking care of life), resonates deeply with me as a retired accountant who’s now enjoying life in Puerto Morelos.
This festival is about more than just having fun; it’s about raising awareness about the delicate balance of our oceans and the role each of us plays in protecting them. It’s a reminder that every small action counts, and that’s something worth celebrating.
